The Fashion Highlights & Lowlights of 2013

This was a year of ups and downs in the fashion world, and we think the departure of Marc Jacobs from Louis Vuitton easily takes the biscuit as the biggest news of 2013. Marc announced his departure after yet another inspirational show with his spring 2014 collection for Louis Vuitton. It was a show dedicated to his many muses with a set that featured a number of his  iconic props from his past 16 years at the Maison. He took the reins in 1997 and has transformed the high end leather goods label into a major player on the catwalk stage. The reason behind his departure was a desire to focus on his own label with rumours of an IPO in the near future. His successor is the Balenciaga Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquiere, so we will see what 2014 has install for them.

It’s all about the Punk. In terms of glamour the Met ball was definitely one of our favourites. The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a new Costume Institute exhibit, "Punk: Chaos to Culture," celebrating a movement that embraced anarchy in the 1970s. "Despite its best intentions, punk has come to symbolize integrity and authenticity," said curator Andrew Bolton. Punk, Metal Studs  were the named styles working their way for the red carpet and Madonna even pulled off a Pulp Fiction style wig. From Miley’s spiked look went down a treat as well as  Madonna’s tartan-tastic suit, the rebellious dress code made for a seriously stylish mobocracy.

Kate Middleton made polka dot and pregnancy fashionable and so was the birth of Prince George.

Two Tone Style
Two tone this year along with neon (a come back of the 80’s style) was huge this year. One of the most talked about Two Tone outfits was worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, when she appeared at the "Iron Man 3" premiere. She looked great in a dress with sheer mesh panels on the sides with sheer black and white being on trend this season.

It’s all about Accessories – Paris Fashion Week

 Design Charles Platiau

Stylish shoes, Chic sunglasses, bright bling, clutch purses, statement jewellery – this was the year that accessories were all out on the catwalk and made a huge hit at the Paris Catwalk – making the runways fun, interesting  and adding an edge to Paris Fashion Week.

Balance Diversity on the Catwalk
There is no doubt Iman and Naomi Campbell are legendary supermodels, but this year they lent themselves to something different: promoting diversity on the runway. They controversially named the designers catwalks whose catwalks were  almost all white. The women joined forces with modelling Bethann Hardison in their Balance Diversity campaign. Explaining their purpose, Iman, now 58, said she was shocked to hear there were fewer black models on the runway than when she stopped modeling in 1989.

Lesbian Couture
The message was unmistakable: At the Karl Lagerfeld haute couture show in Paris, the designer sent two brides down the runway for the finale where the brides walked hand in hand in their feathery concoctions, a clear vote of support by the designer for France's gay marriage law. The show came only nine days after hundreds of thousands of people marched in Paris in opposition to the law.

From the runway & fashion designers to the high street stores they definitely made themselves heard this past year.

An L&G Christmas

Ladies, a week tomorrow and it’s here- Christmas. After weeks of preparation, we can finally look forward to a day of entertaining guests, cooking dinner, tidying up presents, enduring Christmas cracker jokes...
Maybe we’re being pessimistic, so we’ve put together a feel-good list of the things we all just love at Christmas.

Seeing a crisp, frosty morning out the window and knowing it’s Christmas day

Not feeling guilty about Bailey’s replacing the morning coffee

Distributing presents from under the tree to everyone involved

That unexpected present you just love

Christmas lunch, with stuffing, trimmings, sausages and everything else you love...

Relaxing in front of the fire after lunch

Christmas carols playing over dinner

Games in the evening

Relaxing with the family, warm and cosy, in the evening

We hope you're now feeling the Christmas cheer and spirit. And whatever your family traditions are, we wish you a very merry, L&G Christmas.

Sensory Overload – Interview with Yanti Amos, Owner of Earth Yoga

How our Surroundings Inspire our Business and Design

Our designers constantly remind us at Lolo and Galago of the importance of their surroundings to help inspire them to create their beautiful jewellery. It’s one of our founding principles that we scour the World for international designer talent and we actively encourage surroundings and culture to have an impact on our designs. In this hectic time towards Christmas, we thought it might be useful to remind you how your surroundings make effect your choices in life and also introduce Yanti Amos from Earth Yoga NYC to talk more about the importance of taking time to be inspired by your surroundings and take time out for yourself.

Yanti when did you set up Earth Yoga and how do you think your surroundings effected how you set up Earth Yoga?

My husband Richard and I created Earth Yoga NYC in 2009 and we created a community which is warm, nurturing and supportive.
As a practicing yogini, attention to my surroundings is really important. I have daily rituals that I adhere to quite strictly because I work better with a set routine and because I like to centre myself before my day begins. That usually starts with early morning meditation or brahma muhurta-- yogis believe this is a powerful time to commune with ancient sages and saints and as one of the most potent times of the day, they believe this is when they will gain inspiration and guidance. I like to light a candle and look at the sun rise when I do all of the above.

New York is called the ‘ City that Never Sleeps’ – how do you create a balance between your business and lifestyle?

The big test for me and anyone I guess, is finding the peace within you when your outside environment is hectic. This is the enormous challenge in New York City because as a busy business owner you're being pulled in all directions much of the time. But I do think this quiet time dedicated to yourself is essential in order to be able to give back fully to the business, people you care for, and to allow you to be inspired by your surroundings and inner senses which you use to develop your business.

What tips do you have for people to appreciate and be inspired by their surroundings?

My big tips for helping people appreciate their surroundings and keep a sense of calm include: 1. When you're at your desk at home or at the office, take time to close your eyes and listen to your breath-- notice one thing about the breath but don't try and control it-- relax the shoulders and send the breath to your belly. Breathe for at least 5 full breath cycles. 2. Another nice quick tip is to close your eyes and use your imagination to see yourself doing something you love or being with someone who makes you laugh. Breathe into that image and allow yourself to smile. Feel your tension release.

Meditation and yoga have untold benefits-- most obvious are that with a simple meditation practice you can become more creative, more productive, improve your memory and studies have shown that thanks to the neuroplasticity of the brain, you can actually increase IQ. For me personally, when I meditate I am more calm, compassionate, much less stressed, and quicker at resolving complicated problems. I get to the root of issues quicker with an interesting balance of using my intuition with my intelligence. I can't imagine not meditating. That's why I love teaching new clients - I want them to know and feel the benefits and to get to know themselves better. When you're comfortable with yourself, then you start to see your interconnection with other living things.

It’s getting busier towards Christmas and whilst we are working hard toward our launch, and our designers are constantly being inspired by their surroundings, it helps to keep them invigorated and create new unique jewellery pieces. Why don’t you give yourself a few moments a day, just like Yanti does- I think you will find that inspiration can come from anywhere!

December What’s Hot and What’s Not.

The Christmas Season is one of our favourite times of the year and the Artesian Bar at the Langham is one of the hottest places to have a cocktail whilst putting together your Christmas List. London’s very own Artesian retains the World’s Best Bar crown for the second year running, continuing their reign as the capital of cocktails. Try out one of their award winning cocktails known for their “effortlessly blending modern innovation with classic reverence” led by cocktail supremo Alex Kratena. Their standout innovative cocktails include the Super Panda: a concoction served over a single ice ball in a tumbler, positioned on top of an inflated panda-head-lantern filled with a tangerine aroma. The true jewel in itself.

Winter 2013 Trends- working them with jewellery

The cold snap is upon us and it’s time to rock our favourite looks for the season- and as always, navigate the tricky waters that are combining heavier winter wear with your favourite jewellery.
We’ve put together a quick guide of our favourite trends for the upcoming months and how we think best to wear your designer jewellery with them. After all, we want you to be able to enjoy your jewellery as often as possible!

Punk/Tartan

We can’t hide our excitement that Punk has graced the capital scenes for this Autumn/Winter. Punk allows a lot of versatility when it comes to jewellery- edgy, bold pieces with lots of colour, hard lines and contemporary shapes.

This year, designers have focused in particular on Tartan motifs- leather or black rhodium jewellery work best with the colours here, depending on how ‘punk’ you want to go. Grab your largest cocktail ring (or rings!) and don’t be afraid to mix and match the designs here- the contrast makes for an even better rock image. We’re going for some of our Tomasz Donocik jewellery- what a combination!

Pastel Pinks

How we all love to look dainty on a crisp winter’s evening. And pastel pink is pretty much the best way to achieve this look. We’ve seen it applied to a variety of cuts, including a lot of 60s-themed outfits, and love how this dusty colour works so well with low winter lighting.

Silver is the best colour to work with the delicate pinks of this season- we feel that silver jewellery provides a more neutral addition to the pastels- but don’t be afraid to add singular colour splashes with some beautiful stones. A lot of the cuts used this season will work well with longer pendants, such as our Alex Davis fine jewellery collection.

Dogtooth

We can’t get enough of the classic motif, this year re-worked to create some bolder, louder patterns. Particularly in the heavier fabrics, the Dogtooth is a pretty addition to any outfit and is simply gorgeous on those frosty winter mornings.

Go for fine, silver jewellery pieces with some sparkling stones when donning one of these outfits. We find a delicate addition to a bolder outfit is a perfect compliment- it won’t clash or distract from the main fabric but the sparkle from the stones adds a beautiful finishing touch. Try our fine collection- it works wonders!

The Fluted Skirt

We’ve got an adjusted take on the classic pencil skirt for this Christmas season. We can rejoice at this year’s fluted skirt- slimming credentials on our figure whilst not as restricting around our legs- we can look classy and comfortable!

Colder weather allows us to go for some heavier fabrics too- so mix this with some bold, statement bangles and cuffs. Visually eye-catching silver and gold pieces on your wrist help balance the full-body, heavier fabrics of the skirt. A striking combination- our No.8 or Chunky collection work well with this.

There’s so many exciting styles and trends out there for this season that it’s impossible not to find one that works for you- just make sure you get the most out of every outfit by adding  that luxury touch with your jewellery- we want you to get the most out of it!

Lolo and Galago’s Short History of Christmas

Lolo and Galago’s Short History of Christmas

It’s less than a month until Christmas, and although at Lolo and Galago we’re counting down until we launch our jewellery collections as much as we are until the festivities, we believe in embracing and understanding our culture and surroundings to help us come up with all sorts of fantastic inspiration for our designer pieces. So we wanted to learn a little more about Christmas- where did Santa come from? Why do we have Robins on Christmas cards?
Here are our findings on what is truly a remarkable and inspiring day.

Where did Santa come from?
Most of us know St Nicholas- a Saint living over 1,700 years ago who was famed for using his wealth to give to the poor. He became even more famous when he refused to worship Emperor Diocletian and endured years of imprisonment before being released.

Over the years, St Nicholas (Sinter Klass in Dutch- which became Santa Klass and eventually Santa Claus) and his generosity and kindness became well known and transformed him into one of the World’s best known bringers of joy.

Why do we hang up stockings for presents?
One of the more famous stories surrounding St Nicholas was that of a poor man who couldn’t give his daughters presents for their wedding day. According to tradition, St Nicholas left them presents in their stockings which had been hung up to dry for the big occasion. The story stuck, and since then we all hang our stockings up in hope of receiving a gift.

Why do we have to be asleep to get presents?
Ahem. The reason for this is because good old Saint Nicholas did not like his fame, and deliberately tried to avoid crowds seeing him doing his good deeds. And so it was said that, if you were asleep, you stood a better chance of being on the receiving end of his generosity.

Why do we have Christmas Trees?
At any other time of year, the prospect of putting up a tree inside our house would be very odd indeed. However, bringing foliage into our houses has been practiced by the Egyptians, Romans and even European Druids- often as a means of symbolising future harvests. It was Germany, some 500 years ago, that introduced actual trees rather than branches and shrubs, and, according to legend, Martin Luther who first added candles to the tree to capture the beautiful star-lit sky he saw one night for his family.

Whether true or not, we were touched by Luther’s desire to provide his family with some of the beauty nature had to offer. And in many ways, that’s an attitude not too dissimilar to what we do at Lolo and Galago.

As we approach the festive season, we wish you all the very happiest of Decembers.
