What makes jewellery high quality?

A common question we get asked by many women is what makes one piece of jewellery ‘luxury’ when another one is considered a lower quality?

It’s an understandable concern for women when making a jewellery purchase, particularly when looking at luxury brands, and we have therefore produced a very quick guide to help you better understand the world of luxury jewellery. We’ve split our guide into 5 simple sections.

1. What is it made of?
Nearly all luxury jewellery is made of platinum, gold or silver. These precious metals can come in different levels of ‘fineness’ which just means how pure the metal is.
Gold fineness is measured in ‘carats’: 24k is pure (100%) gold, 18k is 75% and 14k is 50%.
Silver pureness is measured as a number: 925 silver (also known as sterling) means it is 92.5% silver. 950 (Britannic) silver is 95%.
You can check the type of metal and fineness on any piece of jewellery by looking at its hallmark - a tiny stamp near the designer’s name which legally confirms what the piece is made of.
There is nothing wrong with not having 100% pure precious metal- in fact, hardly any jewellery is ever made of pure precious metal as it would be too soft to use.

2. Does it have plating?
When done properly, plating has many advantages to luxury jewellery:
- When silver is plated by a metal that doesn’t tarnish, like gold or rhodium, the jewellery will not dull.
- Rhodium is often used over white gold as well, as it has a much brighter white colour to it.
- Plating often allows for a beautiful, smooth finish too.
When looking at jewellery, you will need to ask about the plating. If the jewellery is described as gold vermeil, this means it is silver jewellery plated in gold to a high standard- the gold must be at least 3 microns thick and 10 carats and the silver must be 925.
Check the plating thickness too- the thicker the plating, the longer it will last before it begins to wear. In our experience, 3 microns is enough to last many years.
True luxury pieces will have even plating across the whole piece- look closely at corners, niches and complex areas of the piece and check that the colour and surface is even. If it is, it has been plated well and is a quality piece of jewellery.

3. Stone settings
Look very carefully at how stones are set - this is one area that luxury, designer jewellery really stands out in. Stones are set in many different ways, so we’ve made a quick checklist of things to look for depending on the setting type.

Claw setting
- Check the stone doesn’t wobble
- Check the claws are mounted evenly around the stone, so they are equal distances from each other
- Hold the piece to see the claws underneath the stone- do they run along its edge neatly? If not it will come loose more easily
- Look at the tops of the claws edge on. They should be of uniform thickness and not too thin at the points
- Make sure the tops of the claws come far enough up the stone to hold it securely

Pave setting (when there are lots of small stones mounted together)
- Check very closely to make sure all the small stones are secured from 4 sides
- Pave is made by small ‘drops’ of metal covering over the edges of each stone. Make sure they cover enough of the stone to keep it secure
- Look edge on - the stones should be set almost flush with the surface of the jewellery or they will easily fall out

Bezel setting (this is when a stone is mounted by metal all around its edge)
- Look closely along the edge of the stone- there should be no gaps or ‘wobbles’ with the metal
- The metal edge should come smoothly over the top of the stone and enough to hold it securely

4. Surface and polish
This is another area to look closely at as it makes a big difference to the overall look of the piece. Luxury jewellery brands such as Lolo & Galago use a two stage polish, whereby an initial polish of the surface is followed by a finer hand polish. Looking closely at a piece under a bright light, if you move it around in your hand you can see if the surface has any imperfections- slight dents, variations of depth or any texture to it. A well polished piece should be perfectly smooth and almost radiate with light.

Following the above may be simple ways of checking, but the work and quality of finishing that happens behind the scenes is anything but simple. It’s something we hope you’ll notice with all our collections.

Probably The Most Desirable Cities to Live in the World..well at least Visit!

If you had it all the looks, lifestyle and money and no cares in the world - Where you would choose to live? We at Lolo And Galago have taken a look at some of the most of the desirable cities to live.

Now if you like sun, sea and a good lifestyle and a city with neighbourhoods catering to every personality imaginable, with sun all year round and a beach to top it off then Los Angeles is one of the all time great places to live. You can even hit Malibu beach for a morning surf before heading to work or starting your day.

Venice Beach has long been known as the kooky Mecca of California, and while it's been getting more than a fair share of mainstream tourists, the area nurtures its eccentric spirit. Skateboarders, pamphleteers and body builders run the place. Go for lunch at the local Figtree's Café before scanning the shelves at Small World Books.  LA is also known for it’s more modern museums, one of our favourite is the  Getty Museum (1200 Getty Center Drive). Enjoy some of the impressive works of art covering a vast sweep of history, from the Renaissance to present day. Among them are several paintings by Rubens, a couple by Gainsborough, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Van Gogh as well as art by Miró and Moore in the fine sculpture garden.

For those who like sports you can pass your day watching basketball and catch a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game at the Staples Center. In terms of nightlife, it is in abundance, can travel along Sunset strip to see an intimate rock show at one of the world famous venues in West Hollywood, and then end your perfect day with a late night DJ set at the Avalon. In short LA is a city that has it all.

Another interesting city and a dimensionally opposite one to LA is San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Recently voted by Condenast readers one of the best cities to live in Mexico, San Miguel de Allende has no beaches or blue waters but once you see this place,  people fall in love with it. Almost twenty percent of people living in San Miguel de Allende are expatriates.

Recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Miguel de Allende is named after General Ignacio Allende, a prominent figure in Mexico's War of Independence and played an important role as a hub in the silver trade. It is known for its well-preserved Colonial and Spanish architecture with a façade of pink limestone. What makes this city so attractive? Well, with a temperate climate, vibrant art scene, and moderate cost-of-living, San Miguel de Allende is not only rich in Mexican culture but is a city full of art, beautiful streets and is a place where you feel at home, time has stopped and you feel revived.  It also caters for the foodies, from street foods to gourmet restaurants. Enrique Olvera, one of the most prominent chefs in Mexico, oversees Moxy Restaurant at Hotel Matilda. Located in a courtyard of the hotel, the menu emphasizes inventive dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

The beauty of the village is also captured in the Jacaranda Trees, which blossom lavender-colored leaves. Between March and April, these beautiful trees are in full bloom in San Miguel de Allende.

In summary San Miguel de Allende, is a place to live when you want to relax, enjoy nature and let time pass by, I would go there for the sunset and changing colors of the foothills of the Sierra Madre alone.
L&G Tips: Look up Hotel Matilda and the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende.

Now, for those of you who love modern architecture with an edge, a sleek way of life and the 2020 Olympics locked up Tokyo just got even cooler. If you haven’t been then I would recommend Tokyo if not to live at least to visit.

It is alive with modern architecture, transport like you always dreamed it would run, so much so that Tokyo's railway system seems like it was designed to win world records. It is rich in culture too, if you visit the Imperial Palace on December 23 or January 2, and you’ll see Emperor Akihito and family who make a twice-yearly public appearance at the Inner Palace grounds for the monarch’s birthday and a New Year’s greeting.

The food is a delight with elaborate pastries and picture-perfect sushi rolls, Isetan’s super-stylish depachika, a massive basement food court with worth a visit. Whilst the rest of the world seems to have been converted in to chain fashion house, Tokyo keeps its creative spirit, with countless independent fashion boutiques in the Harajuku area -- all dedicated to generally insane forms of youth fashion.

Modern architecture in this city takes another form, Sky-high one-upmanship seems to be a hobby. When officials in Tokyo learned that the new Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower in China would be 610 meters tall -- the same height that was planned for Tokyo Skytree, they added 24 meters to the top of Skytree to preserve its claim as the world’s tallest tower.

Also what makes this city great is that you can commute to the mountains for a bit of R&R, every March, the "Walking-over-Fire" Festival takes place at Mount Takao. Mount Takao in West Tokyo is accessible by a single train from Shinjuku, the mountain is particularly famous for its easy hike to the top, stunning autumn foliage and special soba-noodle culture.

In 2009, she was named the face of Burberry—which was a first for the British heritage label's and wore many of the well known Christopher Bailey designs including the famously photographed gold mini dress at the house's runway show during London Fashion Week.

In 2011 she was on the front cover of Vogue, embracing the latest trend at the time, pixie cut cropped short hair and a metallic silver fitted trim dress.

In addition, she is an avid painter, which goes some way to explain her creativity and mix of clothes and accessories when it come to style. Once of her favourite pieces of art is The Farm, a painting, once owned by Ernest Hemingway who brought the artist Miró, his first taste of success outside of Spain.

In 2013 she was on the pulled of the height of hot jewellery fashion with her ear cuff look at the Cannes Film Festival where Emma Watson appeared on the red carpet in a diamond encrusted ear cuff by Repossi and we at Lolo and Galago, loved this trend.

Finally, earlier this year, Emma Watson took to the red carpet in her latest movie Noah where the premier in London was held at the Odeon Leicester Square. People came out to see her, not only to sneak a glance but also to see what style of dress she was wearing. As a leader of fashion, she wore a stunning Ralph Lauren, one-of-a-kind white silk-cady column halter gown, which featured a pleated silk-georgette panel at the hip. White is one of the hottest colours on the runway this year and she complimented it with a tangy tangerine lipstick, Jimmy Choo clutch and Anito Ko  Floating earrings and Jennifer Fisher cuffs.

Floral Fashion is Blooming in Spring

When it comes to florals..beauty  is all around us. This season, Valentino showed it off in his stunning floral collection with his design inspirations on a back drop. Red Valentino created these beautiful pieces for their SS14 Ready to Wear Collection.

We also saw in London Fashion week  an eclectic meets edgy where the designers embraced romance and showcased garments fit for even the most contemporary English rose; beauty with a touch of attitude.

London Fashion Week – londonfashionweek.com

This Spring which will transcend into next Spring, there was a trend of floral meets retro. Fashion runways saw nods to classic glamour from the 50s at Emilia Wickstead, retro kitsch at Orla Kiely and80s/90s retro funk by Tom Ford.

At Lolo and Galago, we have created our own floral jewellery to add another dimension to your outfit and the good news is this ring looks great with any combination. The ring was inspired by the vibrant colours of South America. It is an elegant timeless rose set around a deep pink sapphire – there is nothing like a flower that says forever in bloom.

April - What’s Hot and What’s Not!

This April kicks off and Spring is in the air! We take a look at the latest  jewellery styles on the red carpet. The hottest tickets in town were to the premiere of Noah with Russel Crowe and Hugh Jackman was spotted supporting his friend, but it was the  leading ladies Emma Watson and  Jennifer Connelly who made a red carpet entrance.

Emma Watson is some of the hottest property in show biz and and been killing it on the red carpet, in terms of beauty and style. She showcased the latest Revlon tangerine lipstick, the ‘ must have’ colour in 2014 and effortlessly carried off a stunning diamante ear piece, one of the top trends at the moment. Jennifer Connelly, the leading lady also made headlines with her performance and wore a ‘ Wings of Protection’ earring which complimented her sequin and bead embroided dress by the iconic designer  Alexander Mc Queen.

Socks and Sandals? Now if anyone ever told us socks and sandals go together, we would query their judgement or just not believe them. However – let us be the first to tell you, this is what is striding down the runways – heels, flats and all.

Once considered a fashion faux pas...socks and sandals is a trend that designers and celebrities alike are embracing on the runway. We are still yet to be convinced it will hit the high street but time will tell. This season designers rocked headlines  when collections from  Band of Outsiders, Creatures of Comfort, Vivienne Tam, and Louise Goldin strutted their socks and showcased the socks meets fashion style even  Hermes and Alberta Ferretti showed the pairing for Fall 2014 Fashion. I think I would go more for charming the socks off someone..and keep the Jimmy Choos.
