Central Saint Martins: Where the World’s Top Designers Come From

Ever wondered how some of the World’s top jewellery designers get to where they are? Most assume great designers were born with a god-given talent and that moving into creating beautiful jewellery pieces came easily.
Whilst their natural talent may have been in abundance, all designers – even the World’s best – have honed their skills through hard work and, more often than not, excellent tuition at design institutions.
Lolo & Galago has many links to one of these in particular, with several of our World class designers having graduated from the prestigious Central SaintMartins in London, widely recognised as one of the greatest design universities in the World.

We caught up with Caroline Broadhead, CSM’s BA Jewellery Design Course Leader, to find out how the World’s future Creative Directors are taught, and why she believes CSM stands out.

Unlike scientific subjects, with design there are no set rules. Nevertheless, Caroline very much believes there is a process to be followed. “It’s about looking, thinking and then combining those ideas” she explains. “Designers need to have a great awareness of their interests.” To help students do this and keep constantly engaged with the World around them and its inspirations, all CSM students keep a book of inspiring text, images and photos throughout their time at the university.

Whilst every student approaches design in their own way, Caroline explains it is important that they understand a process from initial concept right through to final design. This means developing an original idea, looking at technical details and materials – and using this technical understanding to present the concept into a first designs. Then, test the design both visually as well as physically. This allows them to expand their concept and keep iterating until a final design is created.

With so many stages, we wondered what the hardest part of being a designer is. “The hardest part of the process is the design development: Taking your initial ideas from your head and creating that first physical concept from those ideas is tricky for a lot of students” explains Caroline. To help with this, students are given project briefs, in which they are given very narrow guidelines for a design. This forces the students to delve deeper into that specific subject rather than take a broad approach, causing them to use their imagination to an even greater level.

This is all well and good, but of course a truly talented designer creates beautiful work not only for themselves but also for their customer, and this is something that needs to be ingrained into all future designers’ ways of thinking. Caroline explains that all students are encouraged to have an ongoing dialogue with clients. One of the great things about CSM is that many fashion and jewellery firms get involved – currently they have 13 companies working on projects with students – which allows them to practice working with their customer and learning how to anticipate what will be popular.

So what makes CSM stand out amongst most other universities? “London is inspirational,” says Caroline. “There is so much to be taken from the city, and it attract sambitious and talented students from the outset, so we are starting with a lot of raw talent. We also work with industry regularly, which gives great connections and real-life experience.”

We were curious to know what the head of jewellery design thinks are the most important qualities in a designer – we were given three. “A positive attitude. You can’t give up and have to keep working. Energy and an excitement for your surroundings, awareness of trends and a feel of today’s styles.”

We couldn’t agree more, they are all qualities we see in abundance with Lolo & Galago’s designers, and from this we have created ground breaking collections that are true exotic luxury, and we are sure much of this has come thanks to CSM’s excellent early influence.

Celebs on Trend this Summer – Latest Looks for the Summer 2014

As we hit the high streets, we take a look at some of the latest trends this summer and the celebs who have got it right and are rocking the latest fashion styles.

Jumpsuits – Riviera chic is large this Summer and jump suits are one of the big hits, here we see  Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looking summer chic in this navy jumpsuit, perfect for the  chiller Summer evening and it can also been worn for office and after-work drinks.

This Summer, as we all know it is all about white, any time, any place, anywhere, white is in. Olivia Palermo effortless carries off this pretty summer dress and they way she has styled it makes this one of the best interpretations this season ( dog optional!).

Preppy is another look especially combined with a rock chick accessory. Taylor Swift   has style this look with a varsity jacket, a pair of short shorts to show off your legs and pointed laced flats.

We repeat white is in and for more of a glamorous evening dress look Miranda Kerr has combined his beautiful floaty dress with blue shoes and a clutch an effortlessly chic look. For the ultimate glam look get your hair blow dried and float with the dress.

Pastels – now if they are is one colour you need in your wardrobe along with white. It is a pastel colour. Lace is also a must have, Emmy Rossum looks ‘ Pretty in Pink’ and has combined the  lace skirt and pink jumper and looks summer chic in these these sugary pastels.

Summer Hot Travel Picks

This Summer is approaching fast and we at Lolo and Galago have been looking at some hot and interesting places to visit this Summer. Our first stop is Alaçatı, on the Cesme peninsula near Izmir which is based on Turkey's Aegean coast. For centuries it was a Greek settlement within the Ottoman Empire. The town is full of beautifully built houses which were taken over by Turkish refugees in the 1920s, then the windsurfers discovered the fantastic surf conditions in its bay. Since then the hip Istanbul crowd has fallen this chic town with its cobbled streets, blue-shuttered stone houses, boho-chic hotels and restaurants championing local produce and antiques shops have popped up. We recommend you look up the Alavya (doubles from £159) which is a 25 bedroom hotel with a spa, a restaurant and  a swimming pool set in a walled garden. There are also plenty of more economical hotels such as the Tas (doubles £80 plus)  and the Incirliev (£60 upwards). In the morning don’t missing drinking a coffee at Köse Kahve then head off for some shopping at Köse Dukkan for gifts and linens, and the art and antiques shops on Hacı Memis street. We also recommend a local country-style lunch at Asma Yapragi. Fly to Izmir with easyJet (from April), Pegasus or Turkish Airlines.  For further information check out www.explorealacati.com.

George Town and Penang, Malaysia
For those who like to adventure then, George Town is worth a visit. In 2008 it was named a Unesco world heritage site and since then, it began transforming into one of south-east Asia's hottest destinations. In Penang they have started renovating everything from Chinese mansions to old factories into cool hip hotels. There is something for everyone – delicious street food, fine dining; funky hostels and creatively designer hotel boutiques. For a cocktail we recommend you visit the Three Sixty Degree Sky Bar then head on for a plate of spicy duck soup from a stall on Kimberley Street or for top notch dishes enjoy  Penang Nyonya cuisine at Seven Terraces.  If you can also fit it in, try to go in August and enjoy the month-long George Town festival (1-31 August), or in January they hold the Tropfest (20-25 January - the so called world's biggest short film festival).

Panama City, Panama
Another great location is Panama, sometimes compared to the French Quarter of New Orleans, it is a wonderful mix of faded glory with its dilapidated townhouses & 17th-century city walls which contrast with the newfound design shops, boutiques hotels, cafes and fancy ice-cream parlours such as Granclément on Central Avenue. Recently Ace who have collaborated with Commune Design of Los Angeles and local property developer Conservatorio – have just opened The American Trade Hotel (doubles from $259 +tax) and they have created a hotel with a wow factor. We also recommend the Manrey Hotel ( as seen below) with its great sun lounges and pool to relax after a long day ( www.manreypanama.com).  However at the other end of the spectrum if you fancy something more local then try the hostel Luna's Castle (dorm beds from £8 a night) and is party favourite.
